Last night, at Fanwood’s Forest Road Park, moms, mayors, law enforcement officers, and concerned citizens from throughout the area gathered in observance of National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense Union County organized the Wear Orange event, which was co-hosted by Mayor Colleen Mahr. The program of speakers included Union County Acting Prosecutor Grace H. Park, Rev. Dr. Tracy Sprowls of the First Unitarian Society of Plainfield, and Lauren O’Brien, Group Leader of Moms Demand Action Union County. The speakers were followed by a short performance by Community Actor Student Theatre.
The Wear Orange campaign was inspired by friends of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year old Chicago student killed as a bystander just one week after performing at President Obama’s inauguration. The event was attended by several including several mayors, state officials, and police chiefs from throughout the area. Similar Wear Orange events happened all over the country.
