All applications for permits, unless otherwise noted, must be made in person at the Borough Clerk’s office, Fanwood Municipal Building, 75 N. Martine Avenue, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Thursday evening, 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Certain applications may be downloaded and filled out in advance. License and permit applications and other forms can be found here.
The Fanwood Senior Handyman Program is designed to aid Fanwood seniors in making minor, non-emergency repairs to help keep their homes in good condition. Some of the repairs may include:
Window and screen repair
Shelves and railing repair; replacement of locks and door handles; installation of fixtures and switches
Help moving heavy objects
Install/check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Minor painting, electrical and plumbing
Eligible seniors pay only for the cost of materials.
STARTING A BUSINESS IN FANWOOD
- Check with the Fanwood Zoning Officer first to see if the business is allowed in the zone.
- Submit Plans and Permit Applications (complete set), to the Construction Department, for plan review/approval.
- Submit Business License Application to the Borough Clerk.
- Once plans are approved and permits paid for work can begin.
- Comply with all necessary building inspections for occupancy (Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Fire).
- Certificate of Occupancy will be issued once all required inspections pass.
If a food establishment, the following also applies:
- Submit a Food License Application to the Board of Health Secretary which must be approved and issued prior to opening.
- Submit Plan for location as approved by Building Department to Health Department. Inspector will review application with applicant.
- Health Inspector will conduct pre-operational inspection of the establishment once the customary inspections from the Building Department (Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Fire) have been completed.
- Health Inspector will conduct final inspection for opening, rate the conditions of the premises and deem satisfactory.
The Municipal Clerk is in charge of the administration of the School Board, Primary and General Elections that are held in Fanwood. Voter registrations, verification of registration and voter registration cards can be obtained in the Clerk’s office. There are seven voting districts in the Borough of Fanwood. A food license is required for every establishment that sells, distributes or serves food/milk/ice cream etc. in the Borough of Fanwood and for food vendors attending special events. All fees are non-refundable. Licenses are non-transferable.
