(FANWOOD, NJ) — The Borough of Fanwood has been awarded a $1-million grant to help fund the purchase of a new fire truck for the Fanwood Volunteer Fire Department, supporting the Borough’s ongoing investment in public safety and the equipment needed to protect the community. This grant provides critical external funding that relieves pressure on a tight municipal budget, allowing Fanwood to pay for this vital public safety equipment without overburdening the taxpayers.
The award comes through the Union County Improvement Authority’s 2026 Capital Project Grant Program, administered in partnership with the Union County Board of County Commissioners. The program is distributing $10 million in capital funding exclusively to Union County municipalities, with no local matching funds required.
The program was funded through state money secured with the support of Senate President Nick Scutari, who represents the 22nd legislative district which includes the Borough of Fanwood.
“This grant is an important investment in Fanwood’s public safety and the dedicated volunteers who serve our community,” said Mayor Colleen Mahr. “A new fire truck will help ensure our firefighters have the equipment they need to respond to emergencies and continue protecting our residents.”
“Through our $10 million Capital Project Grant Program, the Union County Improvement Authority is helping municipalities across Union County make critical investments in infrastructure, public safety and community improvements,” said Bibi Taylor, Ed.D., Executive Director of the Union County Improvement Authority. “From replacing essential emergency equipment to improving public facilities, these investments will strengthen our communities and provide lasting benefits to residents without placing an additional financial burden on local governments and taxpayers. We are grateful to Senate President Nicholas Scutari for his continued support and to the Union County Board of County Commissioners for their partnership in making this program possible,”
Fanwood Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Piccola added, “This funding will make a meaningful difference for our department and our ability to serve the community. We are grateful for the Borough’s support and for the investment in the equipment our firefighters rely on to respond safely and effectively.”
As a cornerstone of emergency response, the fire apparatus remains an essential asset for emergency personnel, functioning as a unified command center, rescue hub, and critical lifeline on scene. It provides the necessary capabilities to deliver dedicated first responders, specialized gear, and water resources to active scenes throughout the community.
The Borough of Fanwood appreciates the support that made this grant possible and the opportunity to invest in the future of its Volunteer Fire Department.
