The Historic Fanwood Train Station Museum will be open this Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th, from noon-4 pm for Union County’s Four Centuries in a Weekend. The museum features local history focused on rail service over the years. On display are a collection of vintage tin wind-up toys and Joe Refinski’s collection of American flags from America’s 250-year history. Also, on display are exhibits featuring artifacts and photos from Fanwood’s past. Refreshments will be served and a special area has been set up for children’s crafts. Free parking is available at the train station. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore our community’s past.
The museum houses artifacts documenting the Borough’s historic ties to the Central Railroad of New Jersey, and its land development company that constructed some of the Victorian and Queen Anne homes in the Fanwood Park Historic District. The train station was built in 1874 in the popular Victorian Carpenter Gothic style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It holds the distinction of being the oldest train station in Union County. The structure was used as a railroad station until 1965.
