(Fanwood, NJ) – The Borough of Fanwood has announced that the town will be reducing speed limits and implementing pedestrian and traffic safety measures aimed at increasing public safety.

“The new restrictions and lowering of the speeds will improve safety for all road users. We want to protect pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users while reducing crashes, which ultimately saves lives,” said Mayor Colleen Mahr. “I’m proud that our work aligns with the NJ Vision Zero initiative whose goal is to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2040. Our focus will always remain on making Fanwood the safest community possible.”

The proposed changes are:

  • Lowering the speed limit on LaGrande Avenue to 25 mph;
  • Lowering the speed limit on Martine Avenue from 40 to 35 in certain areas, 35 to 30 in certain areas, and 35 to 25 in certain areas;
  • Prohibiting parking on Hunter Avenue (west side only) from Midway Avenue to Madison Avenue;
  • Prohibiting right turns from Terrill Road onto Paterson Road and Stewart Place during the morning rush hour;
  • Prohibiting turns from Trenton Avenue to go southbound on South Martine Avenue during school drop off and pick up.

“Every single one of us is a motorist at some point and a pedestrian at another, which is why lowering speed limits where practical benefits everyone. Lowering these limits is a proactive step that protects pedestrians in school zones and downtown, while also helping drivers avoid collisions. It simply makes our entire borough safer, and that’s the ultimate goal of these ordinance changes,” said Chief Law Enforcement Officer Lt. Dan Kranz.

“The changes proposed at the recent council meeting are an outgrowth of a committee that was formed specifically to address traffic concerns in our community,” said Councilwoman Erin McElroy, who serves as police commissioner. “I am very grateful to Sgt. Daniel Piccola and Lt. Kranz for their efforts to improve pedestrian and traffic safety in Fanwood.”
