The Carriage House Poetry Series invites the public to attend a free event on
Monday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m., featuring a special Halloween program called “Groovy Ghouls
and Haunted Hippies” in the Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue,
next to Fanwood Borough Hall. (GPS: 75 N. Martine Avenue).
In the spirit of the season, costumed poets will remember the distinctive styles and ideas of the
1960s and celebrate “the way we were” back then. This evening of poetry will observe
Halloween in the tradition of previous readings at the Carriage House, that have included
“Monster Mash,” “Wax Museum,” “Poets’ Apocalypse,” and several others.
The featured groovy ghouls and haunted hippies will include local poets Amanda Berry, Tony
Gruenewald, Nancy Lubarsky, Bob Rosenbloom, Gary Szelc, and Cheryl Vargas. An open mic
will follow the featured performers, so individuals are invited to read one poem of their choice.
The Carriage House Poetry Series continues its 27th year at the Patricia Kuran Arts Center, an
historic Gothic Revival structure that was a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the
series. The special Oct. 20 th reading is free and open to the public.
