(Fanwood, NJ) — Today at 1:37 AM, Fanwood Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire with a possible occupant trapped at a residence on Kempshall Terrace. Fanwood Engine 7, Ladder 1, and automatic aid from Scotch Plains Fire Department responded to the scene. Fire personnel arrived within four minutes of dispatch.

Crews initiated an aggressive interior fire attack and conducted a primary search for the reported victim. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. During the search, one occupant was located and tragically pronounced deceased on scene due to fatal injuries.

A neighbor who attempted to enter the structure to rescue the victim prior to the fire department’s arrival sustained burn injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

There were no reported injuries to fire personnel.

The incident is under investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.
