In an effort to reduce local mosquito populations, the Borough of Fanwood would like to remind residents to be vigilant in your efforts to reduce standing water. Currently, there are no cases of Zika-carrying mosquitoes in New Jersey. However, with the recent rains causing damp conditions, now is a good time to minimize potential breeding grounds.
There are many precautions that can be taken to reduce mosquitoes populations, mainly, the abolishment of standing water. In just 7 days standing water can breed mosquitoes. We recommend that you follow these precautions from the NJ Department of Health;
- Empty and turn over buckets, wheelbarrows, lids, kiddie pools, wagons, old tires or any vessel that collects water. Otherwise, store them inside.
- Keep garbage cans tightly covered.
- Check building structures, such as gutters, for water collection
- Keep rain barrels covered or screened.
- Bird bath water should be changed once a week and the water in any planter saucers should be dumped out every 3-5 days.
- Toys should ideally be stored inside to avoid water collection.
- Secure pool covers, tarps, and covers tightly to avoid puddles and standing water.
- If you have a decorative pond- get fish. If that is not an option, consider using a low grade pesticide, such as Bti, to treat for mosquito larvae.
The Borough of Fanwood appreciates your cooperation in keeping Fanwood a safe and healthy place to live.
