Borough volunteers with a decade of more of service on various boards and commissions and winter sports athletes were recognized Monday night by Mayor Colleen Mahr and the Borough Council at Monday’s night’s council meeting. The Hillcrest Tennis Club and the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Chapter of UNICO were also recognized for milestones.

Hillcrest Tennis Club President Steve McNally and member Stuart Kline were given proclamations recognizing the 100th anniversary of the club.

The Mayor and council recognized UNICO, the largest Italian-American service organization in the United States, on the occasion of the chapter’s 50th anniversary. Geri Samuel, Luciana Rudak and Anthony Garrigan represented the organization.

Mallory Banks, the daughter of Councilman Jeff Banks, was Zoomed into Monday’s meeting from Florida where is attending college to read a proclamation that proclaimed April as Autism Acceptance Month in Fanwood. Mallory, founder of Rockin’ for Autism, has raised over $100,000 on behalf of Autism NJ.

The 35th annual Clean Community Day, to be held this Saturday, April 20, beginning at 8:30 am at the Southside Train Station Parking Lot, was recognized. Environmental Commission member David Schwartzberg accepted the proclamation on behalf of the commission, which was also recognized.

Among boards and commissions recognized for Volunteerism Month were long-time members of the Board of Health, Cultural Arts, Environmental Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Library Board Trustees, Planning Board, Recreation Commission, Shade Tree Commission and the TV 35 Board, a number of whom attended the meeting.

The Mayor and Council approved a proclamation for Arbor Day in Fanwood on Friday April 26.

Jennifer Ives was sworn in as a new member of the recreation commission by the mayor.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School winter sports teams were honored Monday night for their achievements. Representatives from the high school’s winter track, wrestling, and bowling team received proclamations. The varsity swimming teams’ coaches and members were also recognized for their effortss, especially Billie Scherratt, who secured first place on both the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle events.

In other business, the council approved the following action items:

A resolution entering into an agreement with a contractor for installation of a transaction window at the police department.

A resolution setting sewer user rate charges for the year. It was noted that rates will not increase this year.

A resolution appointing Brady DeProspero to the fire department.

A resolution appointing John Piccola as Fanwood Emergency Management Coordinator through December 31, 2026 and Deputy Coordinators Police Lt. Dan Kranz and Clint Dicksen, public works director, through December 31, 2026.

An ordinance prohibiting parking along Tillotson Road between 7 and 9 am and 2 and 4 pm from Westfield Road to the end on school days only.

An ordinance prohibiting the blocking of traffic on North Martine Avenue at Patterson Road (northbound lanes), at North Martine Avenue at the municipal complex exit driveway (southbound lanes), North Martine Avenue and Watson Road (northbound and southbound lanes).

Both ordinances were passed on first reading. The second readings will be on Monday, May 20.
