(Fanwood, NJ) – Mayor Colleen Mahr and the Borough Council issued several proclamations at the Borough Council’s regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 18th.

A proclamation was presented to Al Smith and Deanna Dell-Bene of the Rotary Club of Fanwood-Scotch Plains for Mental Health Awareness Month. Smith spoke of the Rotary’s Stigma Free Pledge and Paint The Town Green campaign. He urged everyone who has not signed the pledge to do so.

Councilwoman Erin McElroy Barker presented Lt. Dan Kranz, Officer in Charge of the Fanwood Police Department, with a proclamation for National Police Week and for National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Lt. Kranz highlighted some of the awards being presented to Fanwood officers this year.

Proclamations were also issued for National Jewish American Heritage Month and National Nurses Week.

A resolution urging state leaders to implement fair and equitable reforms to mitigate the unsustainable increases in health benefit premiums for public sector employees was approved. Borough Administrator Jesse Moehlman listed employee health insurance as one of the cost drivers for this year’s municipal budget.

A resolution was approved setting residential and commercial sewer user charges for the year. Heather Litztbauer of NW Financial, the Borough’s financial advisor, gave a presentation to the Mayor and Council explaining the history of the borough’s sewer utility, the results of a recent analysis conducted on the performance of the utility, and why an increase was warranted.

Resolutions were approved for 10 members of volunteer fire department and rescue squad eligible for the Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP.)

During the public comment portion of the meeting a few residents spoke out in opposition to Artificial Intelligence or AI data centers in Fanwood. Another resident commented on the Borough’s sewer utility fees.
