Juneteenth 2022, sponsored by the Township of Scotch Plains, the Borough of Fanwood and Social Justice Matters kicked off on Saturday, June 18th with a brisk wind and a lot of excitement. Opening ceremonies featured a reading of the meaning of Juneteenth by the president and vice president of the Black Student Union at SPF High and a moving rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Officials of Fanwood and Scotch Plains spoke, as did Assemblywoman Linda Carter ad School Superintendent Dr. Joan Mast. Local families brought folding chairs and enjoyed the music and the vendors. Later, there was food, live entertainment by Amani and a martial arts demonstration.

Members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority brought safety information including first aid kits and poison control info.

Event took place at the Shady Rest Golf and Country Club, the nation’s first Black golf club
