Govenor Phil Murphy has announced that the General Election on November 3 will be conducted primarily by paper ballot. Every active, registered voter in Union County will automatically receive a Vote-by-Mail ballot for the November General Election as ordered by the Governor. You do not need to apply for a vote-by-mail application for the November 3rd General Election.  Voting machines will not be used for the general election. If you come to a polling place, you will vote on a paper provisional ballot (unless you require ADA accommodations).  Between now and the November 3rd General Election, voters can return their ballots three ways: Mail, Drop Box or handing it directly to a poll worker.

Returning your Ballot by Mail

Your ballot will include a return postage-paid envelope, (no stamp necessary) which will be included in the VBM Ballot packet that you will receive.  You may mail your ballot through the US Postal Service.  If a voter opts to mail their ballot, Vote by Mails (VBMs) MUST have a postmark on or before election day and received by our office within 7 days.  Ballots WITHOUT a post mark will be counted if they are received within 2 days of Election Day.

Ballot Drop Boxes

You also may deposit your ballot in one of 22 secure drop boxes located throughout the county. A current list of drop boxes can be found on this web page. The secure ballot drop boxes are under 24/7 camera surveillance. Ballots will be picked up on a daily basis by a bipartisan team of Union County Board of Elections Employees. Residents can drop their ballot off any drop-box in Union County including the box at the Fanwood Memorial Library, 5 Forest Road.

Voters may also deliver their ballot in person at the following offices.  In person delivery requires a NJ driver’s license or NJ issued ID.

  • Union County Board of Elections, 271 North Broad Street, Elizabeth
  • Union County Clerk’s Office, 2 Broad Street, Room 113, Elizabeth
  • Union County Clerk’s Office, 300 North Avenue East, Westfield
