A Message from Mayor Mahr

Earlier today, the state reported another 1,621 COVID-19 positive test results, bringing the statewide total to 128,269. A network outage on Sunday accounts for the lower numbers reported to the state. Union County currently has a total of 13,357 confirmed cases and as of publication, we have not received our latest numbers from the Westfield Regional Board of Health. We will update you tomorrow.

In addition, Governor Murphy announced that public schools will remain closed to in-person instructions for the remainder of the academic year.  The Governor cited the need to protect the health of students and staff and also announced a new steering committee that will explore summer learning opportunities and provide recommendations should the public health emergency extend past the conclusion of the 2019-2020 school year.

The Borough Council will be holding an Agenda Meeting and a Special Meeting at 7 p.m. tonight. Access information is detailed below this message and agendas for this evening can be found here:

Finally, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We all need a little help and should not be afraid to ask for it or extend a, “How are you?” to others.

If you are having trouble accessing relief services, or you’re experiencing other emergency needs, I urge you to reach out to me directly at mayor@fanwoodnj.org.  We are here to help.

I wish everyone a safe and happy weekend!

– Mayor Colleen Mahr

DO YOU KNOW A FANWOOD HERO?

Has someone in your life gone above and beyond to serve others during this crisis? Please continue to email me (mayor@fanwoodnj.org) with photos and stories about our front line heroes. We want to publicly acknowledge their sacrifice and dedication!

Local Heroes

Heather Mills was born and raised in Fanwood and she still lives here with her daughter, Violet. Violet goes to School One, the same school Heather did.

Heather is now a Home Health Aide, working for Jewish Family Services in Elizabeth. She goes out to wok every day to her elderly clients’ homes to help take care of them. She showers them, dresses them, cooks for them, shops for food for them, picks up prescriptions, and gives them companionship and comfort. She is keeping them safe at home. Heather has a warm and compassionate heart. She is stronger and braver than she believes. We are so proud of her!

Thank you, Heather!

Amy (Mills) McCarthy was born and raised in Fanwood, She now lives in South Bound Brook with her husband.

Amy is a wound care specialist nurse working at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth. She divides her time between her wound care patients and helping with the Covid patients. She works 10-12 hr shifts.

As a director, she also has to assess and record the progress of COVID patients. She and her co-workers cheer when a patient is sent home, and also feel the deep pain of losing a patient, on a daily basis. Amy is strong and brave and working hard to save lives. We are so proud of her.

Thank you, Amy!

Student hosts Virtual Web Design Workshop for Grades 5-8

Where: Alexa’s Live Streams on her YouTube Channel Robotic Nation
Programming Languages: HTML 5, CSS, and JavaScript

My name is Alexa Fazio. I am a high school sophomore attending the Academy for Information Technology, one of the five schools at the Union County VoTech. I know that the current situation has made it difficult for afterschool activities to continue. To help students during this time, I am providing a free, virtual workshop that teaches coding, specifically web design, to anyone excited to learn.

I am involved as an officer in my school’s Coding Club, and as a mentor for the SPF Girls Who Code Program. Through the years, I have taken various in-school and extracurricular courses regarding programming. I’ve also received certifications from online Web Development courses.

This workshop is aimed toward beginners, so no prior programming knowledge is required, but if you have some experience that’s great!

Every Wednesday starting May 6th at 4:00 pm, I will live stream on my YouTube channel. During each session, I’ll go over topics, while listeners code along and ask questions in the live chat. If you’re interested, please RSVP through the Google Form by Wednesday, May 6th.

After you RSVP, be sure to check out my video http://youtu.be/lK9nzDyakoo that goes over how to set up your coding environment as well as how to view the live stream.
