In February of 1933, Miss Lillian Virginia Hope brought 10 other college women together at her home on Martine Avenue to discuss the possible organization of a college club with the objective of increasing the interest of local young women in attending college, to provide financial aid, and to be a source of camaraderie to the women themselves. Since 1934 the College Club has awarded $780,000 in scholarships to 582 young women from the Fanwood and Scotch Plains communities. Of special note, Marie Leppert has been with the club for 60 years, serving as president three times. The club’s major fundraiser, “April In Paris,” will be held Sunday, April 28 from 12-4 p.m. at The Westwood, Garwood. Information on tickets will be posted on the club’s website shortly. All net proceeds will go towards providing scholarships to young women in Fanwood and Scotch Plains.
