OUTDOOR ADDITIONS REQUIRE PERMITS, SURVEYS
We remind our residents that you MUST apply for the proper permits and/or surveys BEFORE undertaking actual construction of outdoor home improvements including decks, fences, pools and sheds. Going through the permitting/survey process is all about safety and supporting the integrity of our residential environments.

BEFORE THE FIRST SHOVEL GOES INTO THE GROUND:

  • All home improvement projects are subject to review/interpretation/permitting/fees, not limited to Zoning, Construction, Engineering, Assessment and Administration.
  • An “as built parcel survey” is the key initial document to begin the interpretation process.
  • Please provide a copy of your proposed plan illustrated to scale and location on a copy of your parcel survey.
  • Fees and permitting are driven by the scope of the project, Municipal Land Use Ordinance and the State of New Jersey Uniform Construction Code.

Additional documentation may be required as the project progresses. Failing to obtain the proper permit/survey may result in a fine or the possible dismantling of your project. For any and all questions about the applicable zoning requirements, you may call Ray Sullivan, Borough Zoning Officer and Land Use Professional, at 908-322-5244, ext.132, or email Zoning@fanwoodnj.org.

Information on specific types of projects (sheds, fencing, etc) may be found on the Fanwood website here.
