At the Council meeting on Monday, May 22, Mayor Mahr and Council members honored some of the community residents in the area. Mayor Mahr acknowledged the Memorial Day Grand Marshals for this year’s parade, honoring Ed Miller, Joe Nagy and the son of Alan Ebersole who passed away recently. The Fanwood Volunteer of the Month was awarded to Eric Gaulin, chairperson of the Fanwood Environmental Commission, whose volunteers watch over the Fanwood Nature Center and lead various conservation projects around town.

Fanwood Rescue Squad veteran member Bob Kruthers was acknowledged for his 60th year of service during EMS Week. Councilman Tom Kranz, a 19-year member, joined the Mayor in making the presentation of a crystal plate with the town’s seal engraved. Fanwood police officers were given awards for extraordinary service during National Police Week. These officers diffused an armed assault and administered Narcan to individuals who had overdosed on heroin. Chief Trigo used the occasion to point out the heroin epidemic nationwide and urged residents to attend an information session Wednesday, May 24, 6:30 p.m., at Forest Road Park featuring himself, Scotch Plains Chief Ted Conley and Union County Prosecutor Grace Parks. The Mayor also congratulated Mallory Banks, 15, on the successful Rockin’ 4 Autism fair at LaGrande Park last month that raised $12,000 for autism research and support.
