Sunday’s 5K Pizza Run, Family Fun Run and Health Fair received rave reviews at the October regular meeting of the Mayor and Council Monday, October 16, 2023.
“It was a great day,” said Councilwoman Erin McElroy Barker who reported the 5K and Fun Run saw a total of 595 registered runners compared to around 200 last year. She and Mayor Colleen Mahr held up one of the new t-shirts designed by Recreation Director Bob Budianski that was worn by runners and volunteers.
“Everybody did awesome, the pre-planning was great,” said Lt. Dan Kranz who helped plan the new route, directed the police response and supervised volunteer road marshals.
The 5K and Fun Run were staged in front of Borough Hall sharing space with the annual Health Fair, organized by Dr. Kathy Shin of Fanwood Eye Care, which enjoyed more exposure than in previous years due to its conspicuous location.
The Council also heard reports on a number of other projects, to wit:
- Councilwoman Kathy Mitchell reported the free leaf raking program for seniors and disabled residents is available again this year. Both volunteer rakers and seniors seeking the service may sign up shortly on the Fanwood website and using forms available at Borough Hall and the library.
- The Halloween Parade will occur as it does every year on October 31st starting this year at the historic train station. Details coming shortly on the website.
- The Fanwood Museum, currently sharing space with the temporary library at the train station, will move permanently to the new library when construction is completed sometime in the spring of 2024.
- The police department lobby will be redesigned to establish a permanent service window.
- Development Director Liz Jeffery reported that the former Railside Café, located at the corner of South and Martine Avenues, will soon be occupied by a new restaurant operated by the owner of Jessica’s on Terrill Road in Plainfield.
