Tucked behind the trees and shrubbery on North Avenue in the heart of Fanwood is a recreational oasis servicing tennis aficionados in our community for 100 years.

Hilltop Tennis Club features a Har-Tru clay court, a playing surface not typical of tennis courts in the local parks. Club activities include men’s and women’s doubles and singles, clinics, meet-ups and parties. Members use an online app to reserve court time.

“During the pandemic, I was inspired to pick up my tennis racket after 25 years. Not many of my friends played so it was hard to schedule games,” said Susan Rash of Scotch Plains. “I heard about Hilltop Tennis Club and found a community of people who love the game and want to play. It’s like having a personal clay court to tune up my tennis skills.”

Mayor Colleen Mahr and the Borough of Fanwood presented the Club with an official proclamation recognizing its 100th anniversary at Borough Hall in April. Hilltop Tennis Club was originally constructed as a red clay court by the Wickett family in the early 1900s. The Club soon attracted friends and neighbors. Today the clay court is maintained by Club members.

Hilltop Tennis Club is located in Fanwood at 336 North Avenue. The Club welcomes new members of all ages and abilities. For more information email stevemcnally@yahoo.com or call (973) 216-4824.
