The Carriage House Poetry Series invites the public to attend a free evening of poetry readings on Tuesday, July 18th beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Patricia Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue, adjacent to Fanwood Borough Hall (GPS use 75 N. Martine Avenue). The evening’s readings will feature two distinguished New Jersey poets, Laura Boss and Jim Gwyn.
Laura Boss is editor of the poetry magazine Lips, which she founded in 1981. She is a first-place winner of the Poetry Society of America’s Gordon Barber Memorial Award. Her other awards include three fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the first International Award in Poetry from the International Poetry Festival in Swansea, Wales. Laura’s new poetry collection, “The Best Lover,” is due this year from New York Quarterly.
Jim Gwyn is a poet and actor who lives in Clifton. His poems have been published in a variety of literary journals and anthologies. Jim’s recent work has appeared in Lips, the Paterson Literary Review, the Rutherford Red Wheelbarrow, and Seventh Quarry: Swansea Poetry Quarterly. He was awarded first prize in the 2008 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Contest and his poems have been nominated eight times for the Pushcart Prize.
The Carriage House Poetry Series was launched in 1998 and is now in its nineteenth year at the Kuran Arts Center, an historic Gothic Revival structure that was once a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the series. The July 18 reading is free and open to the public. An open mic will follow the featured performances.
