(Fanwood, NJ) – The Borough Council approved a resolution at Monday’s final meeting of the year for an agreement with the Borough of Garwood to share municipal court operations.
Fanwood Borough Administrator Jesse Moehlman said the two towns currently share the position of court administrator. He said the new shared services agreement combines facilities and staff completely between both municipal court operations. The new shared municipal court goes into effect February 1 pending authorization by the state Administrative Office of the Courts.
According to the resolution, the two towns will share facilities, equipment, office staff, and record storage “in order to conserve resources and to provide for a more efficient and more economically sound municipal court system.”
The Fanwood Council approved a related resolution to extend the shared services agreement for the court administrator until the shared municipal court is approved by the state and court services commence.
The council also approved a resolution to renew the shared services agreement for public health services with the Westfield Regional Board of Health for another five years.
A resolution was also approved for a contract with MRC for the purchase of additional playground equipment at Forest Road Park.
Councilman Erin McElroy Barker urged residents to pay attention to new parking signs in Lot 9 behind South Avenue stores as of January when new rules take effect in order to avoid getting parking tickets.
Council President Patricia Walsh said the Fanwood Recycling Center will be open on Saturday, January 3rd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am.

Councilwoman Gina Berry noted that the Fanwood Memorial Library will host a North Jersey Blood services blood drive on Saturday, January 3rd from 9:30 am until 3:00 pm.

Councilwoman Walsh said that Fanwood will be holding a LEGO building project as of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution on Saturday, March 21st at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. Over 50 buildings were photographed as part of the project. The Historic Preservation Commission is organizing the event.
Families will be able to sign up and will be assigned one of the buildings or homes photographed to recreate using LEGOS as part of a “beautiful representation of the town with all the buildings,” Councilwoman Walsh explained.
In her Environmental Commission report, Councilwoman Walsh said as part of an Eagle Scout Project, Peyton Rose planted 11 Atlantic White Cedar saplings at the Fanwood Nature Center.
Mayor Colleen Mahr said Double Jelly, located at 34 South Martine Ave. next to the Bagel Cafe, will hold a ribbon-cutting this Saturday, December 20th at 11:00 am.

The Mayor also said Carano Square, the former A&P location, has received its final state permits and will now apply for building foundation permits for the first building in the multi-building development.
