The delayed Arbor Day observance took place Thursday, May 2nd, with presentations by the Park Middle School Environmental Club and free tree seedlings provided by the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign. Shade Tree Commission Chairman Steve Falco led the proceedings once again, unveiling the Tree City USA flag with a little help from his friends. It’s the 26th consecutive year Fanwood has earned this certification for the town’s efforts at tree conservation, planting and education. Councilwoman Kathy Mitchell read a proclamation and Dean Talcott, Shade Tree Commissioner and Rutgers Master Tree Steward, read poetry and gave a report on some of Fanwood’s noteworthy trees. The kids from Park demonstrated the correct way to mulch a tree (make a donut, not a volcano) and reminded everyone that the Emerald Ash Tree Borer is still menacing our ash trees.
