In celebration of Women’s History month, this week we are recognizing the women who donate their time on the borough’s Environmental Commission: Sandy Redder, chair; Suzanne Custons-Sanschagrin, Phyllis Sandrock, MaryAnne StaRosa, Leslie Krone-Speck, Carol Chimento, and Andrea Parra. The Commission’s mission is to promote the conservation, protection, development, or use of all Fanwood’s natural and water resources. They are the caretakers of the Fanwood Nature Center, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2024.

The commission conducts outreach programs to raise awareness on environmental issues as they affect the town. They also work with Boy and Girl Scouts and other youth and community groups to perform various environmentally-oriented projects throughout the town. They organize the annual Earth Day/Clean Communities Day program in the spring and just held a Sow Workshop for gardeners. The commission also sponsored a Youth Day last fall with activities such as making bird feeders and a scavenger hunt, as well as participating in the Great Birdhouse Contest.
