Come celebrate our 30th anniversary of Fanwood’s Clean Communities Day on Saturday, April 27, 2019 as part of the community’s observance of Earth Day.  Help us give the Borough a “spring cleaning”. Individual volunteers of all ages, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, interested organizations and family groups are invited to assemble at 8:30 AM by the Millennium Clock at the south side parking lot of the  Fanwood railroad station. Give back to the community, help out, and feel good about taking care of your environment.

Participants will be able to enjoy bagels (generously donated by Fanwood Bagels & Deli), donuts and coffee. Each participant will receive an Earth Day t-shirt as well as some fantastic giveaways.  The DPW will be passing out work gloves, pick-up devices and plastic bags for trash and recyclables. Joanne Gemenden, Union County Recycling Coordinator, will also provide participating children with some “goodies”.  After working together cleaning up, participants will receive a coupon for a slice of pizza from Nick’s Pizza & Deli.

Last year over 100 volunteers participated.  Volunteers will be organized into teams with a leader and then transported by the Department of public works employees to one of thirteen locations designated for clean up.  These include Forest Park, La Grande Park, the Carriage House Park, the Borough Hall, the Fanwood Public Library and the municipal parking areas, as well as the area around the railroad tracks.  At no cost to the Borough of Fanwood, NJ Transit will provide two flagmen to provide security for those assigned to this area. In addition, members of the Fanwood Lions Club will pick-up litter along Fanwood’s stretch of South Avenue.

Clean Community Day has become a rite of spring in Fanwood.  Not only does it generate community spirit and volunteerism, but also it makes a tangible contribution to the community by removing tons of litter.  This event provides an instructive experience for participating children on the importance of recycling and keeping their environment clean. The Clean Community Day Committee includes; Clint Dicksen, Bob McCarty, Harry McNally, Lin Vlasaty and Margaret Chowdhury.
