At the Mayor & Council meeting held on Monday, May 21st, several residents and students were honored for their dedication to Fanwood and in their own lives. Thank you to everyone to attended! 1. Municipal Budget Introduced: The Borough Council introduced a $6.1 million operating budget that features a tax decrease in the municipal portion. Public hearing and final vote scheduled for June 25th.

2. Mayor for a Day: Sixth grader Ethan Grant won a contest to become Fanwood Mayor for a Day. He presided at the podium with Mayor Colleen Mahr for the presentation of awards and proclamations.

3. Volunteer of the Month: Tom Barton, Recreation Director for Berkeley Heights, was recognized for volunteering for various Fanwood Recreation programs.

4. Louis Bay II Scholarships: A scholarship program of the NJ League of Municipalities, Fanwood residents Declan Cassidy and Aaryn Ross were selected for their interest in municipal affairs. Ms. Ross’s essay also won the statewide competition. The photo also shows Mayor for a Day Ethan Grant and Mayor Colleen Mahr.

5. National Police Week: Chief Richard Trigo honored a number of Fanwood police officers for meritorious actions in saving lives and assisting the public. Awards were given for two instances of drug overdoses which the officers saved the victims by administering Naloxone, making arrests in a home invasion, answering more than 300 calls for service during the nor’easter storms over a 30 hour period, and for solving a $200,000 online theft and stopping the stolen funds from being lost. The Chief also thanked the Mayor and Council for supporting his decision to send officer Elliot Bernard to Puerto Rico last fall to assist the local police there in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
