The Borough Council adopted two ordinances and passed several resolutions at Monday’s Mayor and Borough Council work session meeting.

The first ordinance concerns salary ranges for non-union borough employees. Borough Administrator Jesse Moehlman said the ordinance brings up the employee salary ranges to fit within the salaries that are in the town budget to accommodate 2024 salaries as well as the cost of living adjustments for 2025 salaries.

The second ordinance concerns the opening of streets by contractors. Permit fees will be $125 for up to 20 square feet, $259 for between 20 and 80 square feet with additional fees for permit extensions and additional square feet. Cash bond is also required for proposed street openings within the borough’s right-of-way.

A resolution was approved establishing salaries for non-contractual employees.

The Mayor and council discussed the issue of cannabis establishments as permitted by the State of New Jersey. The governing body agreed to have borough officials come back with more information such as zoning and licensing elements if dispensaries were to be permitted in Fanwood.

Councilwoman Erin McElroy Barker said additional volunteers are needed to serve as road marshals for the Pizza 5k and Family Fun Run on Sunday, October 20. The Fun Run is at 11 a.m. followed by the 5k at 11:30 a.m. Anyone interested in serving as a road marshal is asked to contact Recreation Commission member Venessa White at venessa.white@gmail.com.

She said pizza will be served to the runners and beer for those runners of legal age.

Councilwoman Trish Walsh said the police department will be doing the Police & Pumpkins again this year on Saturday, October 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at La Grande Park where Families and kids decorate pumpkins.

Councilwoman Katherine Mitchell said the Green Team is partnering with The Crayon Initiative, an organization that collects used crayons, melts them down and then recirculates them for children in hospitals.

Members of the community can donate used crayons at drop-off sites on South Avenue, which are Charles Studio, Fanwood Eye Care and the Goddard School from Tuesday, October 15 to Monday, December 30.

The next Mayor and Council meeting will be the regular monthly meeting on Monday, October 21 at 7 p.m.
